Understanding and Supporting ADHD (Short Course)

In ‘Understanding and Supporting ADHD (Short Course)’, Liv Gisby provides support staff with an evidence-based toolkit for the day-to-day inclusion of neurodivergent learners. This course focuses on the ‘on-the-ground’ reality of the classroom, exploring how ADHD traits impact a learner's ability to navigate instructions, organisation and emotional regulation. Participants will learn how to recognise different ADHD profiles and provide the real-time scaffolding needed to help learners engage meaningfully with their work. The focus is on practical, inclusive strategies that look past surface-level actions to support the underlying regulatory needs of the learner.

By completing this short course, you will:

develop a practical understanding of how inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, and combined ADHD looks in the classroom across different age groups;
explore how ADHD often sits alongside other needs, such as autism and learn how your existing support strategies can be adapted for ADHD learners;
gain an awareness of the different ways ADHD presents in girls and learn to identify the subtle signs of internalised hyperactivity or quiet inattention;
apply immediate, classroom-ready strategies (such as visual prompts and sensory adjustments) to help a learner manage their energy and focus;
learn how to effectively communicate and collaborate with teachers, parents and specialists to provide a joined-up approach to a learner’s daily routine.

Liv Gisby brings a unique perspective to education, drawing on over 15 years of experience across mainstream and special school settings, combined with four years of service as a Police Detective. Her educational career includes roles as a class teacher across the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), key stage 1 and key stage 2, before specialising as a SENCo for six years, during which she gained the National Award for SEN Coordination. Liv has an undergraduate degree in Psychology and extensive further training in Speech and Language (SALT); Occupational Therapy (OT); Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC); trauma; attachment; and specific learning difficulties, like dyslexia.

As a senior leader, she was responsible for managing staff development and delivering whole-school CPD related to special educational needs. Her ability to navigate complex safeguarding issues and multi-agency work is enhanced by her background as a detective, where she focused on domestic abuse and child protection.

This dual expertise now informs her work creating essential training materials for educators. Liv specialises in bridging the gap between clinical theory, classroom practice and critical welfare needs, ensuring that every resource she develops provides educators with the knowledge and practical tools required to offer truly holistic and impactful support for all pupils.

Ruth is a Video Content Creator on the CPD team at Twinkl. She is an experienced primary teacher, having taught across both Key Stage One and Key Stage Two. Ruth has worked as part of a music partnership, delivering high quality music lessons in a range of educational settings, including SEND and secondary schools. Ruth has also held leadership roles, including Head of Primary Music. She holds a degree in Music and Musical Theatre, a PGCE in Primary Education, and is currently working towards a qualification in Primary Music Leadership.
