Progression in Grammar: Supporting Pupils from KS1 to KS2

This practical and in-depth professional development course is tailored for Teaching Assistants (TAs). Its purpose is to provide TAs with the necessary knowledge, practical strategies and effective resources to confidently and effectively help pupils build a solid understanding of grammar across the primary phase. The course covers the entire primary curriculum, focusing on both key stage 1 (KS1) and key stage 2 (KS2). This ensures that TAs are fully equipped to have a significant, positive effect on improving pupils' writing fluency and accuracy.

By completing this course, you will:

understand the progression of grammar across the primary phase, recognising how foundational skills (like basic word types) build into advanced concepts (like the passive voice and cohesive devices);

move beyond naming and labelling terms to explaining the functional effect of grammar, using visual aids and modelling to make abstract rules concrete;

use a range of practical strategies and scaffolds, such as ‘magpieing’ language structures, expanding simple sentences and colour-coding visuals, to support all learners, including EAL learners and those with SEND, and foster independence;

reflect on your own practice and plan immediate, short-term and longer-term strategies to strengthen learners' understanding of grammatical knowledge, skills and terminology.

She holds a First Class Honours Undergraduate Degree in Primary Education (5-11) with QTS and a National Professional Qualification for Middle Leadership (NPQML). Fiona has also thoroughly enjoyed acting as a mentor to trainee teachers and early career teachers during her time in the classroom.
