Mental Health Awareness in a Secondary School

This course provides an overview of mental health awareness in a secondary school setting. It covers essential topics, such as understanding mental health, implementing a mental health curriculum and effective communication strategies. Participants will learn to identify signs of struggle in pupils, promote self-reflection and utilise strategies to empower young people. The course also addresses signposting and safeguarding procedures, and emphasises the importance of a whole-school approach to mental health and wellbeing, including staff wellbeing.

Becky Dawson has over 20 years of experience in education and mental health. She spent 16 years in mainstream education as a drama teacher, SENDCo, Safeguarding Lead and Assistant Head, and 5 years as Resilience Training Lead in Newham, implementing a whole-system mental health approach. She contributed to the Zinc Venture project, aimed at improving mental health for 300 million children globally. She has also developed an alternative education programme for children with SEND and is a visiting lecturer for Weston College. She partners with South London and Maudsley Hospital “Be Well” hubs and the Charlie Waller trust. She is the National Wellbeing Lead for Twinkl, with a focus on ensuring all education stakeholders have access to high quality resources to ensure wellbeing in education is central to their work.

Jessica Clews has 10 years of experience in secondary education (11-16) including leadership in wellbeing and PSHE. With an undergraduate degree in BSC Psychology, Jessica has always had a passion for highlighting the importance of mental health and wellbeing in schools and as Senior Mental Health Lead in her previous school, led many whole-school initiatives, policy changes and training to prioritise this beyond the curriculum. As the Educational Content Lead for Secondary PSHE at Twinkl, she is driven to provide high quality, trusted resources to support young people, educators and parents with wellbeing in education.
