Feedback to Feedforward - Setting Targets and Next Steps

Ever wondered how feedback can move beyond simply correcting mistakes to actively shaping a pupil’s next steps? This course delves into the concept of the feedforward approach, showing teachers how to transform assessment insights into clear, actionable targets that pupils can understand and apply independently. Participants will explore evidence-informed strategies for prioritising high-impact next steps, embedding routines that keep targets visible and meaningful, tailoring guidance for stretch, consolidation and SEND needs, and involving pupils in co-constructing their own learning goals. The course also provides suggestions for practical tools, sentence stems, visual prompts and tracking systems to make feedforward manageable, sustainable and impactful across all key stages. By the end, teachers will be equipped to turn feedback into purposeful learning habits that enhance progress, build pupil independence and reduce workload.

By completing this course, you will:

distinguish between evaluative feedback and feedback that drives future learning, understanding how each influences pupil progress;
translate lesson outcomes and success criteria into clear, measurable next-step targets, selecting one or two high-impact priorities per pupil to keep feedback focused and actionable;
establish routines, visual supports and classroom systems that help pupils understand, remember and use their targets during guided and independent work;
tailor targets to stretch, consolidate or support pupils – including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) – using adaptable frameworks that ensure challenge and accessibility for all learners;
embed pupil agency through co-constructed targets, self-assessment and simple tracking tools, enabling pupils to revisit, practise and evidence progress within ongoing learning cycles.

Yiotina has spent over a decade immersed in the world of primary education. Most of her teaching career, she juggled the roles of Science and Maths subject leader, while working across key stage 1 and 2 (mainly based in years 2 and 6). Armed with degrees in Marketing Communications, Business Analysis and Primary Education (plus a National Qualification of Middle Leadership), she’s been at the forefront of introducing new initiatives, reshaping curricula and championing practical, hands-on learning to ensure every pupil thrives.
From training staff to supporting long-term skill progression, Yiotina has always been passionate about helping both pupils and teachers grow. Now, as a Twinkl CPD Content Writer and Editor, she’s swapped the classroom for the creative space of professional development, using her expertise to craft engaging, impactful resources that continue to support educators and learners.

Jess Hursit is an experienced teacher with a strong background in maths education. As a former Maths lead, she worked closely with Maths Hubs and supported the development of her school’s maths curriculum. Jess has worked in a leading training school, where her teaching was regularly observed by visiting educators, and she served as a mentor to trainee teachers and early career teachers.

Carly is the Quality of Education Lead at Twinkl PD, overseeing the development of Teachers' Standards courses. She is an experienced primary school teacher and senior leader with a MA in Education Practice and NPQ in Leading Teacher Development. Carly also facilitates the ECF, delivering training for current mentors and ECTs; she is passionate about accessible and actionable professional development for all educators at all levels.
