Understand trauma is defined as an event (or series of events) that is experienced by an individual as harmful and that has a lasting, adverse effect on the individual’s functioning or wellbeing.
Understand that trauma differs from ordinary challenges or hardships in that traumatic events tend to be sudden and unpredictable and the person experiencing the trauma will often feel that it is beyond their personal control.
Understand how trauma affects the brain and how this might impact pupils in school.
