By completing this course, you will:

understand trauma is defined as an event (or series of events) that is experienced by an individual as harmful and that has a lasting, adverse effect on the individual’s functioning or wellbeing;
understand that trauma differs from ordinary challenges or hardships in that traumatic events tend to be sudden and unpredictable and the person experiencing the trauma will often feel that it is beyond their personal control;
identify how trauma affects the brain and how this might impact pupils in school;
help develop trauma-informed approaches in your school and classroom.

Jo is a seasoned educator with over three decades of primary education experience, including 16 years as a headteacher across independent schools, maintained local authority schools, free schools and academy trusts. Her leadership roles span stand-alone primary schools and all-through institutions, enriching her understanding of educational continuity from nursery to sixth form. At Twinkl, Jo leads the team of writers, editors and designers who make up The Leaders Team, guiding them through the creation and production of resources to support and inform school leaders and senior leadership teams.

Carly Watkins has over twenty years of experience as a primary school teacher, including several years as an assistant headteacher, with responsibility for whole school curriculum development and overseeing pupil progress and attainment. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Education Practice and an NPQ in Leading Teacher Development.

Carly has been a mentor for both student and Early Career Teachers and currently facilitates the Early Career Framework for ECTs and their mentors, delivering training at conferences and via online seminars. At Twinkl PD, Carly heads up pedagogical professional development, a role which means she can support educators to develop their personal practice and pedagogy, something she is passionate about, on a national scale.
