This research-backed, accredited course, developed in partnership with The Carbon Literacy Project, offers a deep dive into climate change science and practical solutions tailored for schools. Whether you’re new to climate education or looking to expand your knowledge, this course provides actionable steps for integrating climate-conscious practices into your school’s daily operations. The enrolment fee covers the training and Carbon Literacy certification fee for one member of staff only.

About the Course

Our course is specifically designed for schools and will help you to implement the aims and action areas outlined in the Department for Education Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy. Participants will include teachers, school leaders and sustainability leads. Throughout the course, Twinkl’s experienced Carbon Literacy trainers will ensure you have opportunities to engage in valuable discussions about the climate-related issues facing schools and how different school communities are addressing these across the UK.

This innovative course is designed to include comprehensive consideration of climate issues which can lead to actionable outcomes, including:
  • how to take action to reduce direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions with the aim of transitioning towards net zero;
  • how to incorporate climate education into your curriculum and ensure you are addressing common misconceptions;
  • how to adapt to climate change impacts and enhance the resilience of your school site;
  • how to support children to gain green skills and a connection with nature.

Can more than one person from a school attend?

The course fee covers the training and certification of one individual. Please book separately for each person who would like to attend. If you are looking to book for larger groups of attendees please email us at sales@twinklpd.com as it may be possible to arrange bespoke sessions or discounts in such cases.

Can you arrange alternative dates / times?

We are able to arrange bespoke session dates and times for larger groups. Please email us at sales@twinklpd.com if this is of interest to you, or if you have any feedback about what would work best for your school. We will also be adding additional course dates and times which will be added to this website as they become available.

Do I need existing knowledge of climate change and sustainability?

No. Our course is designed to give an accessible overview of these issues and how they may affect schools. You don’t need to have any prior knowledge or experience to attend but, if you do, there will be opportunities to share this with other course participants during the live training sessions and in the community chat.

How much time do I need to commit to the course?

The course will take approximately three mornings or three afternoons to complete. We have allowed for three live training sessions in order to provide a comprehensive coverage of the issues, facilitated by experienced Carbon Literacy trainers. There is some follow up learning and activities set after the live sessions, bringing the total learning time to approximately 9 hours.

What support is available?

You will get to know your Carbon Literacy trainers during the live training sessions. They will talk you through exactly what to expect in each training session and what follow-up learning and actions you need to complete afterwards. Your trainers will be available via the community chat on the course portal if you have any questions.

Kat Oakes

Educational Content Lead - Sustainability

Kat is an experienced secondary Geography teacher with a Master's in Physical Geography and is Carbon Literate certified. After five years as an Economic Development and Regeneration Officer in local government, she now manages the production of the Eco Adventurers sustainability scheme, sustainability CPD resource collection, and the development of the Sustainability Hub. Kat is passionate about collaborating with organisations to advocate for sustainability and climate change education in the National Curriculum. She is a member of the National Climate Education Action Plan group and recently endorsed their whitepaper to government, on behalf of Twinkl, calling for better integration of sustainability in the curriculum.

Lizzie Owen

Carbon Literate certified

Lizzie is an experienced primary school teacher and is Carbon Literate certified. After four years of teaching in primary schools, including responsibilities as Sustainability lead and Eco Schools coordinator, she now works as a Sustainability teacher content editor at Twinkl. Lizzie has worked on the production of the Eco Adventurers sustainability scheme, a selection of CPD resources and other side projects, working to increase her knowledge and understanding of climate change science, the challenges we face today and solutions to work towards. Lizzie is passionate about the environment and providing high quality, engaging resources to support others to engage in climate change awareness and help to protect our planet.

Laura Seymour

Carbon Literate certified

Laura has a degree in geography and a master’s degree in environmental management and impact assessment and worked for many years as a sustainability consultant, before moving into the education sector and qualifying as a teacher. She now combines her passions for sustainability and environmental education in her role at Twinkl where she has developed a course in Carbon Literacy for teachers as well as working on a range of sustainability CPD resources and Eco Adventurers resources for children. She is passionate about helping people to connect with local places and communities and take positive, practical steps to address sustainability concerns.
